The patchwork bedspread or patchwork quilt is made of various pieces of fabric with a wadding layer in between of generally polyester or cotton.
The face of the patchwork bedspread is where the creativity takes place as different pieces or patches of fabrics are combined together to form intricate and beautiful designs. The reverse of the patchwork is usually plain, striped or a block pattern. The layers are quilted together by machine stitching and sometimes part hand stitching. This stitching is usually a feature of the patchwork design.
Although the
basic skills of patchwork quilt making had
been around for many centuries, the real impetus for the patchwork quilt
began in America in the nineteenth century. These patchworks were very
traditional with large stars that quintessential American ''log cabin''
look. A lot of our bedspreads are
made for the American market but are slightly more contemporary these days
with modern design and colours or more of an English ''country cottage''
look.
